The Forces that hold the Nanoworld together & All about Seeing Atoms

Karsten Pohl

Department of Physics and Materials Science Program, University of New Hampshire, Durham, NH, U.S.A.

We will visit the wonderful world of atoms, meet them first one-by-one and then observe how they come together to form the Lego-blocks that will build the nanoworld. This journey is made possible by an amazing microscope—built here at UNH — that lets us see and study atoms as they assemble themselves to form shiny gold surfaces or spongymembranes with pores 10,000 times smaller than a human hair.
